To be honest, I totally appreciate when the waiter at a French restaurant here in the USA speaks French (non as a native of course). It shows that this person is really trying to please the customer, and I am more than likely to leave a bigger tip.
French language is a plus at any level of a career.
About diplomatic opportunities, one of my former student worked for the Argentinian embassy here in Miami. Even though, he spoke already several language - Spanish, English and Portuguese - he needed to improve his French level in order to improve in his career.
I taught him for about two years and he was able to take the DELF B1 and B2 successfully and therefore access a better position with the Argentinian government. Great achievement!
